Balamku is a small Maya
site that was only discovered in 1990. However, it is one of the most fascinating Maya sites in the Mexican province of Campeche
. It has one of the largest surviving stucco friezes in the Maya world. Balamku (Black Jaguar) was occupied from around 300 BC. Its most important buildings date from AD 300-600. The most outstanding discovery so far at Balamku is the "Templo de los Frisos ("Temple of the Friezes"). Excavations have uncovered an intact, 20 meter-long painted stucco frieze dating from AD 550-650. It depicts an array of: mythological creatures, giant frogs, rising kings, serpents and jaguars.
