Baba is a common Ukrainian and other Slavic languages nickname

A nickname is "a usually familiar or humorous but sometimes pointed or cruel name given to a person or place, as a supposedly appropriate replacement for or addition to the proper name.", or a name similar in origin and pronunciation from the original name....

 for grandmother. It is also used as a nickname for father in countries from the Eastern-Mediterranean to the Far-East. The simple phonetic makeup of Baba is not overlooked by babies, who have been known to utter Baba as their first decipherable word. In fact, Baba is also used in Afrikaans to mean 'baby'.

The different meanings are prevalent in distinct geographical regions:
