BMW N47 is BMW's latest four-cylinder common rail diesel engine, with many improvements over its predecessor, the BMW M47.

Having made its debut in the face lifted BMW E87 and the E81 which were both introduced in March 2007, it was also offered from the outset in the BMW E82 and E88, which were introduced later in the same year. The engine also became available in the BMW E60-E61 from September 2007, several months after the E60-E61 were face lifted, during which time the older M47

The 115 bhp tune is for the entry level E81 and E87 116d, as well as the entry level E90 316d, the 143 bhp model sees service in the E81, E87 and E88 118d, E90 and E91 318d, not forgetting the E84 X1 sDrive18d and xDrive18d, and also the BMW E83

Introduced in September 2009 for the 2010 model year is a new 163 bhp/265 lb ft (360 N m) derivative in the new E90 BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics, with exceptionally low CO2 emissions of only 109 g/km. This exceptionally low amount of CO2 is matched by extremely low fuel consumption of 68.9 mpg, lower than the Second Generation Toyota Prius despite offering superior performance: 0–100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph).

The "standard" x20d model has 14 extra bhp, at 177 bhp but 7 lb ft of torque less at 258 lb ft(350 N m). This is found in the E81/E82/E87/E88 120d, E90/E91/E92/E93 320d, recently retired E60 and E61 520d, E84 X1 sDrive20d, X1 xDrive20d and E83 X3 xDrive20d.

In Europe, this particular version is one of the most popular engines in the entire range; the best selling 3 series is the 320d, while the 520d is the UK's best selling 5 series. Needless to say, it is also the de facto choice for X3 buyers in Europe.

In October 2007, BMW introduced another derivative of the N47D20, the twin sequential turbo model. With 204 bhp, it is the first production diesel on sale to achieve a specific output of over 100 bhp per liter. It uses the same turbo technology first shown in the E60 535d. It is also more powerful than the E90-E91-E92-E93 325d, which has 197 bhp in spite of having a 3.0 liter straight six engine. Award 2010, is effectively the top model for these ranges in certain markets: in the UK and Ireland the X1 is only available with diesel power, so the company's straight 6 is not offered at all in these markets. In these countries, only the E81 1 Series Coupé and E88 1 Series Cabriolet are available with BMW's famous straight 6; the E82 3-door hatchback and the E87 5 door hatchback only have four-cylinder engines and this is the most potent 4-cylinder engine BMW makes.

Interestingly, BMW has held onto their straight 6 for the new F10/F11 525d, despite many reports to the contrary saying that the E60 525d would be replaced with a 523d featuring the N47 4-cylinder engine; although it develops 204 bhp, identical to the engine in the 123d, it develops 332 lb ft(450 N m) of torque as opposed to the 295 lb ft(400 N m) of torque that the 4-cylinder engine features.

It is not yet known whether the new F10/F11 520d, featuring 184 bhp and 280 lb ft(380 N m) is going to be designated N47 or N47TU.
