The BET Awards for Best Male and Female Hip-Hop Artist are given to the overall best male and female rappers because of their albums, singles, and videos the same or previous year.
In 2007 there was no award category for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, there was only the BET Award for Best Male Artist which was renamed the BET Award for Best Hip-Hop Artist. The reason is that most female rappers had not released any promotional material, mainly due to recording albums, criminal charges, and legal disputes. T.I., Kanye West and Jay-Z are the only rappers to win the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist more than once; Jay-Z and T.I. have each won twice and Kanye West three times.
