Despite finding himself boxed in with 200m remaining and trailing Bekele by several metres, El Guerrouj ran down and overhauled the Ethiopian in the final 30m to win by just 0.2s. In doing so he completed the Olympic 1500m and 5000m double, not won since 1924 and denied Bekele the Olympic 5000 and 10,000m double - which he would ultimately win 4 years later
