 in 997 and was first abbot of Pannonhalma Archabbey

, which had been founded by Géza. He then served Géza's son, Stephen I of Hungary, and became the first archbishop

Astrik served as Stephen's ambassador to Pope Sylvester II. The pope gave Stephen recognition as King of the Hungarians. Stephen was crowned by Astrik in 1001.
