San Francisco

Ackerman was superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District starting in 2000 immediately after her resignation from her Washington, D.C. post. In May 2007, after her departure, she sued the district, asserting that they had not paid $170,000 of her agreed-on severance compensation. She dropped the suit the following month.

Philadelphia

Ackerman joined as Superintendent in 2008. After three years, she reached an agreement with the City of Philadelphia to resign her post in return for $905,000 plus $86,000 in unused vacation pay. $405,000 of the buyout was provided by private donors. In November 2011, she caused surprise and outrage by filing for unemployment compensation.
