located in the U.S. state of Arizona and contains the southern portion of the city of Phoenix
and some of its suburbs, including part of Glendale
.
It is currently represented by Democrat Ed Pastor
.
and an older portion of Glendale
and is the most friendly territory for Democrats in the state. It also has the highest percentage of African-Americans of any district in the state. It also has the fewest number of senior citizens of any district.
John Kerry
received 62% of the vote in this district in 2004
. Barack Obama
also swept the district in 2008
taking in 65.73% of the vote while native son John McCain
received 33.02%. It was Obama's best (and McCain's worst) performance in Arizona.
