Damian (Dhimiter Kokoneshi) marks a pivotal position in the history of the Eastern Orthodoxy. Damian was the last archbishop of entire Albania before the introduction of Communism in the country that would turn into a dictatorship to last a harsh 45 years. Enver Hoxha, the dictator ordered the burning of all churches including ancient religious art. The cutting of the archbishop's (Damian) beard took place in public as a figurative death of religion in the entire country. The archbishop was stripped of his home and wealth involuntarily so that the estate would be distributed to the people of Albania.
