Potts Graduated from the University of Michigan in 2000 with a B.A. in English and a secondary teaching certificate. At Michgan, he swam for the University of Michigan swim team from 1995–99, serving as team captain in 1998-99. Potts was a six-time NCAA All-American swimmer while at Michigan and a two-time Big 10 individual champion. He was also a member of the Michigan track team in 1999-2000.

While at Michigan, Potts met his future wife, Lisa Simes, who was a member of the University of Michigan gymnastics teams. Simes was an acrobat for Cirque du Soleil's 'O' show in Las Vegas. The two married on June 30, 2004. They have a son, Boston Thomas Potts.

Potts turned professional in 2003 and was named USAT Rookie of the Year. He was also the only athlete to break into the Top 100 World Rankings as a rookie.

Potts won the 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champion in Clearwater, Florida in a time of 3:42:33

In 2008, Potts placed 7th in the Ironman World Championship in Kona.

In 2009, Potts placed first in the St. Anthony's Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

, Whirlpool Ironman 70.3 Steelhead and the Timberman Ironman 70.3. He experienced a crash during the 2009 Chicago Triathlon when an age-group athlete drifted in front during his attempt to pass around mile 8 of the bike portion. He was able to return to competition for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, where he finished 9th.

On June 27, 2010, Potts captured his first career Ironman win in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with a winning time of 8:24:40. At the 2010 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Potts finished a disappointing 21st overall, despite being first out of the water by nearly two-and-a-half minutes with a time of 48:48 on the swim.

On May 15, 2011, Potts won the Rohto Ironman 70.3 in Orlando, Florida, with a final time of 3:53:14, ranking first in swimming and biking, and fourth in running.

On June 5, 2011, Potts won the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, California for the fourth time, with a time of 1:59:45
