As of the census of 2000, there were 31,894 people, 11,941 households, and 8,645 families residing in the county. The population density was 67 people per square mile . There were 12,958 housing units at an average density of 27 per square mile...

As the only high school in the county, ACHS offers a comprehensive roster of classes, from advanced (AP) classes to classes offered through a program of reciprocity with local colleges that allows students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. In addition to the academic program, Amherst County High School also contains a comprehensive vocational-technical department which includes Welding (offering certification), Auto Mechanics, LPN Nursing (certification offered), EMT-B (certification offered) Masonry, Carpentry, and Agriculture.

Athletics

A full roster of sports are offered, including football (Region III Dist 4 State Champions 1995, 2006, 2007, Reg III Dist.4 State runner-up 2008 and 2009), Basketball, Baseball (VA Reg III, Div 4 State Champs 2003), Softball, Golfing, Swimming, Track, Tennis, Wrestling, Track and Field, Soccer, and Volleyball. The football program has gained state and national success. ACHS football was ranked #1 in the state and high in the national rankings during its two state champion seasons (2006 and 2007 coached by Scott Abell). The football team since then has made it to two more state championship games (2008 and 2009)but lost to Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia. But they still can't beat Northside!
