. Located at an elevation of 2257 meters above sea level, this airport has one asphalt runway 3604 meters long by 43 wide.
This airport was built in the late 1990s to replace an older one located 7 kilometers from Mek'ele. The airport was named after the famous Tigrayan warlord Ras Alula. Aba Nega was his favorite horse, following the custom of attaching the horse's name to that of a well-known warrior's first name. When it first opened, Alula Aba Nega had one unpaved runway 3000 meters long, with seven flights to Addis Ababa
