He doesn't really love the girl, but stays together with her just for sexual reasons and in wait of something better. Somehow she finds out, and breaks up the relationship, but by then the guy has realized that he has fallen in love with the girl after all. Thus he was 'almost honest' when expressing his feelings for her, because she thought he was lying when he was actually speaking the truth. Unfortunately, she doesn't want to see him anymore.
