. The municipality is situated approximately 25 km from Malaga capital. It has a population of approximately 4,300 residents. The natives are called Moriscos.

The centre of the village is situated on an undulating and soft land, which the highest point is Santi Petri(794m).

The River Campanillas passes by this area, as well as streams of olive and rubber trees.
Its economy is based on the cutivation of almond and olive trees.

History

The origin of Almogía is remote. Some cave paintings have been found from the prehistoric age in some caves of the municipal district; also remains from the Roman presence have been found in several points of the village but it was not until the Muslim domination that the centre of the present village was built around the castle. Now there are very few remains of this castle "torre de la vela".

The name of Almogía in Arabic was Al-Mexia, which according to different versions of two historians, one of them opted for the stem of the name of a tribe "al-mexias", others claim that it means "La Hermosa" (beautiful).

Gastronomy

The typical andalucian dishes are gaspachuelo, porras and asparagus. A special dish can be made by adding to the asparagus, potatoes and cod.

Monuments

A church from the sixteenth century, "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción".

"Ermita del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús" from the seventeenth century.

"Ermita de las Tres Cruces" from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, restored a few years ago, where the fiesta of the verdiales is celebrated at the beginning of may.

Holidays

The town hall of Almogía. 20th of January: San Sebastián.

The fair is about the fifteenth of August in honor of "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción".

In the middle of may is the celebration of a saints day´"San Isidrio". Every yerar it gets better thanks to the public tribute and the clubs, that walk to the fairground "las Dos Herrizas", where the great festival takes place.

In February there is a carnival celebration, that has reached a peak over the last few years.

At the beginning of October, "Almond day" is celebrated with multitude attendance. The visitors besides walking round the village, can also sample typical dishes that are on many stalls which are set up especially for the occasion. They can also buy handmade products like ceramics and pots.

The population census in the year 2005 was 4.316 inhabitants.
