The town began as a mining settlement around the Berry Leads mining area. It had a peak population of about 1,500. Allendale once had 5 small pubs and a few corner shops, now all of which have closed. The small boarding school located in Leishman Street has just been sold 3 years ago.

Allendale Post Office opened on 6 May 1881, was known as Allandale from 1885 to 1893, and closed in 1974.
