Murphy led St. Mark's School to a 27-3 record as a Junior, but they fell short of a state championship. In April 2011, he decided to join the class of 2011 and attend Duke in the fall of that year. Alex Murphy on why he committed to Duke:
"I've had a feeling in my gut for a long time now and when I went down to Duke for my unofficial [visit] last month it just kind of solidified things," said Murphy who shortened his list earlier this fall. "When I talked to Coach K at the end of that trip I knew that was where I wanted to be. The reason I didn't do it right then and there was that I wanted to come home and talk to my family and the people close to me."

a year earlier then expected. Having met all of the academic requirements, Murphy will be able to enroll at Duke in the fall of 2011, and is the fifth member of Duke's 2011 recruiting class.

Murphy on why he reclassified: "It was a very difficult decision but in the end I just thought this was the best thing for my future," Murphy said. "It's a great opportunity."
