State Route 46 is a two-lane route for its entirety. Its present purpose is to serve as a connecting route between Heflin and communities in western Georgia such as Bowdon

Between 1926 and 1934, the route was designated as US-78S, while the present route of US-78 was designated as US-78N. It later was designated as Alternate US-78.
