. It is valid for boarding busses, funiculars, LRT, metro, commuter trains, ferryboats and trams operated by the Metropolian Municipality. Unlike by payment cash, the Akbil allows passenger transfer service within the tranportation network under some defined conditions. Akbil is an acronym formed from "akıllı", which stands for "smart", and "bilet" meaning "ticket".

The Akbil device is touched to the reader at the faregate to gain access for boarding or on the vehicle to ride. The system uses iButtons or smart radio-frequency identification cards as tickets. Akbil's are 1-Wire
