INTRODUCTION
Established in 1995, the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi (AKHSS) is situated in a 26-acre campus next to the Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan School and the Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development.
Since its inception, the school has strived to provide quality education to its students. It is the flagship institution of the network with outstanding academic, co-curricular and sports performances. AKHSS, K, has received the Best College Award for four consecutive years since 1999. The awards for 2003 onwards are yet to be announced by the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi.
The foundations of the present education system were laid by Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah Aga Khan III, who established over 200 schools during the 20th century, the first in 1905 in Zanzibar and Gwadar, followed by schools in Dar es Salaam in 1906 and in Mundra, in India, in 1907.
The Aga Khan Higher Secondary School strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities and community life. It challenges its pupils to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The School believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student’s education is the ability to analyse what they do not know.

Library
Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi, has a well-stocked library of 7000 books on diverse subjects relating to the need and interest of the students. It subscribes a score of national and international periodicals and several leading newspapers. The library also has a well-maintained audio visual section having a fine collection of movies and CDs on history, religion, language, literature, science, management and politics. The career section comprises prospectuses and informational material of prominent universities and colleges in Pakistan and abroad. A high speed internet connection is also available for browsing the World Wide Web.
Botanical Garden
The botanical garden at AKHSS, K, is a shaded, cool area with many exquisite varieties of herbs and foliage maintained by the school's horticultural society. With a greenhouse and a pond, it provides students with opportunities to observe a number of different species of plants, flowers and fish, and at the same time adding colour and beauty to the campus. The students often visit the garden: some to sit under the shades and study; others to pick flowers and leaves for section-cutting in the botany lab.
Cafeteria
School cafeteria is a place where students make a beeline during break time. It offers a complete and wholesome fare in a café style seating arrangement. It is a place bubbling with fun and frolic during recess. Be it a birthday bash or celebration of a victory in sports, the cafeteria is always alive with laughter and energy. Students often have their study sessions in cafe and engage themselves in discussions over tea and sandwiches.
Sports Facilities
Physical Education plays an important part in life at AKHSS, K. The school offers a comprehensive programme of intra-school and inter-school sports activities. The school teams for various sports participate in competitions held at Inter-School, Board, District and City levels. Qualified physical training instructors (male and female) supervise the students' physical training. All the classes have regular sports periods during the week.
Students are encouraged to participate in sports activities and are provided with necessary resources. There are separate, well-maintained grounds for cricket and football and courts for volleyball and basketball. The school also provides facility for indoor games such as table tennis, chess and scrabble.
Health Care Facility
The school has a AKU trained qualified nurse for each shift. Apart from first aid, this facility can take care of minor ailments and emergencies of daily life. The nurse also conducts Health Awareness Programme.
Computer Laboratory
Along with a critical mind, use of technology is a pre-requisite for success in today's world. For this reason, AKHSS, K, has a large and well-equipped computer laboratory. Here, students improve skills that enable them to utilize computers effectively in their studies and practical life.

The Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology laboratories at AKHSS, K, are all well-equipped.
