Adams House (East London)
Encyclopedia
Adams House is the name given to the offices in the only remaining structure of the Anchor Brewery on the corner of Mile End Road and Cephas Avenue, in east London. The residential part of this Grade II listed building is known as Charrington House after the brewery that once owned the site. The two blocks are linked through the basement.

Charrington United Breweries Ltd was an English brewery company founded in 1738 which merged with Bass in 1967.-History:Robert Westfield, a member of the Brewers' Company from 1738, owned a brewery in Bethnal Green, London, prior to 1757, when he took Joseph Moss into partnership and moved to new...

and Moss in 1766, and then Charrington and Co. in 1897. The Anchor Brewery grew to occupy a large site on the north side of Mile End Road, opposite Stepney Green.

The Anchor Brewery ceased production in January 1975, and most of the buildings were demolished. The brewery gave its name to the Anchor Retail Park that was built after the brewery was demolished, where Adams House and Charrington House stand today.

Present day

Anchor House was purchased by the senior partners of Adams Solicitors, and renamed Adams House. Throughout 2008 and 2009 they undertook comprehensive renovation works to restore the building to something of its former glory.

As well as being Grade II listed, Adams House is protected under the Stepney Green Conservation Area. A report by Tower Hamlets Council in October 2007 described Adams House as:

"...an unusual corner building which makes a positive contribution to the area, both because of its architectural quality and its historic importance as a surviving part of the large brewery which dominated the site for a long period of time."
