Origin

The competition was first held in 1887 and was organised by the Aberdeenshire FA, which formed the same year. The first members were Aberdeen, Orion, Caledonian, Aberdeen Athletic, Aberdeen Rovers,Aberdeen Rangers, Bon Accord, Black Diamond, Turrif Our Boys, Albert, Rosebery, Britannia, Granite City, Aberdeen City Wanderers and Balmoral.
Dr Maitland Moir, honorary president, presented the Aberdeenshire FA with a cup which ultimately became the property of Aberdeen FC after their third win in 1890. After this the AFA bought a new trophy.

2009 Aberdeenshire cup

In 2009 Nine highland league sides competed for the Aberdeenshire cup with newly elected highland league sides Formartine United and Turriff United competing for the first time. While junior side Banks o' Dee who competed the season before did not compete in 2009.
