Michlewitz was elected in a special election following the resignation of Salvatore DiMasi

. On May 19, 2009, Michlewitz won the Democratic primary with 50.19 percent of the vote, defeating Susan Passoni (46.13 percent), Lucinda Rivera (2.44 percent), and Brian Ross (1.04 percent). On June 16, Michlewitz won the General Election with 79.78 percent of the vote, defeating non-party candidate John A Keith (14.83 percent) and Republican candidate David Trumbull (4.37 percent).

Prior to the election, Michlewitz worked for the Former Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives Sal DiMasi as his Constituent Services Director from 2004 until DiMasi's resignation on January 27, 2009.
