Plot synopsis

Lawson Russell (Gooding) is a Louisiana

-based criminal lawyer

 who gets disbarred for committing a mistrial. After that, he retires to Key West

 and decides to write a book about his experience. While working on it, he suffers from a bout of writer's block

, but he meets an old man who lets him read his manuscript

. However, the old man spontaneously dies, and Russell decides to pass the book as his. The book ends up becoming a huge success, but Russell gets arrested for the real murders of five lawyers mentioned in "his" book. He then finds himself trying to prove his innocence.
