retail services company whose primary interests and activities lie in several areas of food retailing.

Businesses

Blakemore is divided into several subsidiaries with different emphases and goals:
  • Tates, which owns and operates over three hundred convenience shops
  • SPAR Distribution, which is one of five regional wholesale distributors for SPAR in the UK; it services shops in a swathe across the south-east of England, through the Midlands, to the whole of Wales
  • Complete Shop Fitting, which provides services and supplies to shops
  • Wholesale, which operates nine cash and carry depots

History

Blakemore was started in 1917 as a grocery by Arthur Blakemore and his wife; after early success, they branched into supplying other groceries, at first with bags and other provisions, later with products for resale.

Arthur Blakemore was followed by his son, Frank, who in turn was followed by his son, Peter Blakemore. The company is still privately owned by the family and family foundation.

Today the company does not directly operate any retail outlets, though it does own and supply over three hundred convenience shops through its Tates division. Instead it focuses fully on the wholesale side, including fresh food and food to be prepared on shop premises.

In spring 2011 Blakemore purchased Capper & Co., another regional distributor for SPAR, increasing the shops it services to nearly 1000 and its turnover to over £1 billion per year.
