Established on 16 August 1956 at Plattsburgh AFB with KC-97s providing air refueling to SAC B-47s and other USAF aircraft as directed; inactivated in April 1961 with the phaseout of the KC-97. Reactivated in 1963 at Plattsburgh with jet-powered KC-135 Stratotankers. Deployed aircraft and personnel to forward SAC provisional units in Western Pacific during the Vietnam War; deployed aircraft and personnel to 1703d Provisional Air Refueling Wing, King Khalid AB, Saudi Arabia, Oct 1990-Mar 1991 during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Remained on duty until shutdown of Plattsburgh and inactivation of parent 380th BMW in 1995.
