Oklahoma came into the game ranked #1 in the Coaches Poll and #3 in the AP poll. The Sooners, having unfairly been dropped in the AP poll after not only not losing any of its games, but putting out some great performances against Florida State and Ball State, came into the game with something to prove. Texas, on the other hand, came into the game trying to seek legitimacy about its return. After a disastrous season and a subsequent 4-0 start, Texas was still trying to maintain its #11 ranking.

In the first quarter, the Sooners had the ball first, and quickly drove down the field. A few stuffing by goal line forced the Sooners to settle for a field goal. When Texas got the ball, Texas quarter Case McCoy was sacked and was forced to fumble the ball, giving the Sooners the best chance at another score. Oklahoma was stuffed once again at goal line and settled for another field goal, while Texas moved the ball down the field for a field goal of their own. Both teams settled for a 6-3 score at the end of first quarter.

In the second quarter, Landry Jones did a small pump fake and found Kenny Stills at the endzone for a touchdown. Texas responded by throwing an interception, but forced Oklahoma into a 3rd and 25 situation. Oklahoma converted 3rd and long and then scored another touchdown, leading 20-3. After trading a few punts, Texas throws another interception that was returned for 55 yards for another Sooner touchdown, but poor kickoff coverage gave Texas returner Fozzy Wittaker a 100 yard return for a score to match the Sooner touchdown seconds ago. Oklahoma responded by driving down the field once more to take full command of the game by scoring another touchdown, and led at halftime by a score of 34-10.

After halftime, Texas tried to find some magic with its offense, but instead fumbled the ball again and the Sooners picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, poor blocking by Texas led to another Sooner touchdown through running back Dominique Whaley, and from then on the Sooner defense took over. Sooners led Texas 48-10 at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, both teams traded a few more punts, but a Sooner defender was able to rip the ball out from Texas and returned it for another touchdown, and the Sooners started pulling out its starters. Texas managed to put a meaningless touchdown to give its first and only offensive touchdown of the day, but that was all Texas could do, and the game was over by a final score of 55-17. The Sooner defense outscored the Texas offense.
