. It was the first tournament after 1988, but after this tournament has been taking place in every 2 years. This edition had 16 teams competing in 44 matches between 11 January & 1 February 1998. These included the 9 ICC Full Members and 7 qualifiers.

England won the tournament, beating New Zealand in the final by 7 wickets.

16 teams participated in the competition. The 9 nations with ICC Full Membership automatically qualified for the tournament. 7 additional teams were determined by the 1997 Under-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
