After the Portuguese Football Federation
started and after the national team
played their first game, it was decided that a nation-wide football competition was needed. A knock-out competition would be played and the winner classified as the Portuguese Champion. The regional champions from the Algarve

were invited to take part in this newly formed tournament. Due to organizational and financial problems, the Algarve and Madeira FAs could not participate and, thus, the competition only fixtured two teams: the Lisbon champions, Sporting CP; and the Porto champions, FC Porto. The winner of the 'best-of-three' games was declared champion. FC Porto went on to win the inaugural championship.
