Well, this question has been posted for the better part of a year now and remains untouched. So I shall - perhaps foolishly - jump in an stir the waters a little.

I would suggest that, in English at least, the word love has three basic meanings.

L1: you (it) please(s) me.
"I love ice cream!"
When a young child says to a gift-bearing grandparent, "I love you," it often (not always!) means "You please me."

L2: I want to please you.
When a gift-bearing grandparent says to a young child, "I love you," it often (not always!) means "I want to please you."

L1 & L2 (singularly or combined) are very often the meanings in mind when lovers (romantic) say to each other, "I love you."

L3: I will do what is best for you.

In my understanding, L3 is the highest form of love. This is supposed to be the kind of love that forms the foundation of a spousal relationship ("...for better or worse, in sickness and in health..."). L3 is not about feelings at all. Rather it is about an act of the will; a determination to do what is best for another regardless of the feelings of either party.
