Panama Canal Zone

Some 40 years ago, I was traveling by car toward the north, on the east side of the canal when I came across a 'notification sign' along the roadside about a path taken centuries previously through the rain forest from the Pacific to the Atlantic... I decided to explore this path by foot when I became lost.

Eventually, I came to the east shore (of Gatun Lake?) at which point I swam west across to a small island. From there, I took a small row boat laying abandoned (which had a US Navy designation on it) to the mainland on the west side. At that point, I walked to a house and the police were called. A US pliiceman of some sort picked me up, drove me across the Bridge of Americas and then to my parked car. He kept remarking to me that he was astonished as to the distance he had to drive me back to my starting point.

I recently visited Panama and could not find any point where my trip across the canal may have occured. Any ideas?
