Italian Renaissance

By the time the Middle Ages drew to a close, central and southern Italy were largely lawless, poor regions. The papacy had moved to Avignon, and the southern regions of Italy had been subject to long periods of foreign rule.

After the Crusades, the northern regions of Venice and Genoa emerged as commercial powers to be reckoned with.
