Is there any account of "the Mountain Tapir" ever seen in the Great Smoky Mountain area where I live? Late one night I was at about 2500 feet. It was cloudy with rain and poor visability. The animal was in front of me in the middle of the road. He didnt want to move at first until I honked my horn. I thought it was one of our common black bears until it turned to go off the road. It looked somewhat like a bear until I got a good look at the "snout". It was long and very similar to the picture you show on the internet.
After looking at your picture of thr Mountain Tapir I feel that I have a rare experience.
