I'm a Component Engineer for a utility and we use Nordberg Emergency Diesel Generators as power backup. My questions are in regard to Turbocharger maintenance. Brown-Boveri model VTR-500H turbochargers are used on our EDGs. Our current maintenance strategy utilizes some non intrusive PdM activities to sample oil and vibrations to detect the onset of degradation. This is also backed up with some periodic testing and a Condition Base Inspection/Overhaul of the turbocharger based on PdM and testing results. History has shown that this is not necessarily a "bullet proof" strategy and some failure still occurs. Does anyone have experience with a more reliable maintenance strategy that they can share with us?
