I recently travelled on Interstate 8 from Yuma to Alpine. East of Alpine I drove a winding, mountainous route through an eerie landscape consisting of huge bolders.I was running out of gas and the light was fading and I couldn't figure out where I was. The only references on my map refer to the Cleveland National Forest or the southern tip of the Vallecito Mountains, but pictures of these places don't come close to the landscape I saw.

Does anyone know this area?
