German historian Gerhard Weinberg takes the view that the treaty was actually generous to Germany, in that they remained largely free of post-War occupation and were allowed to retain their system of government.

British historian Correlli Barnett says that the terms of the Treaty of Versailles were nowhere near as harsh as the terms of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk that Germany imposed on Russia in 1918.
