How has Stevenson's work been received by critics?

Stevenson was popular in his own time, but in the early 20th century he began to be seen as a second-class writer, and gradually his work ceased to be taught in schools.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature excluded him from their first seven editions. He was not included until the eighth edition in 2006.
