How did Darwin conceive his theory of evolution?

Upon his return from his travels, he presented his mammal and bird specimens to the Zoological Society. Ornithologist John Gould realized that Darwin had brought him several new species of finches.

Darwin had cataloged the specimens according to the islands he found them on. It soon became apparent that distinct species had developed on each island.
