They were called after President Hoover because many people blamed him for the country's economic collapse. Charles Michelson, publicity chief of the Democratic National Committee, invented the term 'Hoovervilles.'

ACTUALLY, SOME WERE CONSTRUCTED BY GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES.MY 14 YEAR OLD BROTHER RAN AWAY AND STAYED IN ONE IN ARIZONA FOR SOME 6 MONTHS IN 1936. HE DID NOT REPORT ANY DIFFICULTY WITH THE MEN AND SAID THEY CONCEALED HIM FROM OFFICIALS WHO INSPECTED THE CAMP.
