Early heresies arose over the debate about Jesus' humanity and/or divinity. Heretics such as the Docets believed that Jesus's humanity was an illusion, and that he therefore was never incarnated as human.

While Christians today regard early heretics as presenting a unified front, in fact the early heresies were manifold and diverse.
