No he did not. Though he came from a rural background, he got a good education by reading and asking questions, and eventually became a lawyer. Of course he could spell good.

I had read when i was quiet younger he would review a document and instead of writting "o, correct", he simply put o.k, thus creating the slang we use so often today.
