History

The school began as Church High School in the President's Estate in 1941. It was renamed to Naveen Bharat School in 1947. In 1949 it moved to its present location on Mathura Road

 and was renamed as Delhi Public School. The principal is Mr. M.I. Hussain.

The foundation stone of the school building was laid in 1956 by Dr.S. Radhakrishnan

By 1962, the school had moved into a three-storey building, and it had a student population of about 2,500 students. By 1970 it had a student body of almost 3,000 students.

The Rev. (Dr.) J. D. Tytler was the first principal of the school. He was followed by Dr. K. C. Khanna who took over in 1952, and then, in 1962, by Mr. Din Dayal. The current principal is Mr. M. I. Hussain.

Campus

The campus is spread over 15 acres (60,702.9 m²) surrounded by ancient Islamic-style tombs, and is situated in the heart of the capital, near the Purana Quila and the Zoological Gardens. The school buildings today comprise four computer centres, a work-experience block; science, maths, psychology, biology, chemistry and physics laboratories; three libraries, three swimming pools, squash courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, cricket grounds, football fields, facilities for indoor, a cafeteria, a hostel, a clinic and a gym. The hostel buildings are divided into five wings:
  • Fifth Wing is the girls' hostel,
  • First Wing is where Standard 12th students stay,
  • Second Wing houses Standard 11th students, mostly science students who joined the school in the current year,
  • Third and Fourth Wings have a mixed population. However, there are more primary level students in the Fourth Wing. The Fourth Wing was originally the school clinic.


In 1996, DPS Society, the parent organization, started a girls' hostel in DPS, Mathura Road. For this, a building was needed. The management then converted the clinic into a girls' hostel. The clinic was moved to a temporary three-room facility on the ground floor of First Wing.
