He represented the Swiss People's Party in the Hinwil municipal government from 1982 to 1990. From 1988 to 1994 he headed the local party section. He has served on the board of the cantonal party section since 1993. From 1991 to 1999 he represented the People's Party in the cantonal parliament of Zürich. In 1999, he was elected to the National Council. As of 2008, he is chairman of the National Council's Finance Committee and also serves on the Security Policy Committee.
