The throne of passed to Zhu Yihai when Zhu Shouyong died of a strange illness. Many myths in this region have explored the illness that struck down Yihai's father. Such myths claim food poisoning to court rivalry to a plague brought down from disrespect to "Buddha". Whatever the case, Yihai's father was struck down by a strange illness and would pass on the crown to his son.
