History

The history of Zhenhai High School can be traced back to 1732, when its predecessor, Jiaochuan Academy(蛟川书院), a school of Confucian

Zhenhai High School was formally established by a local businessman Sheng Weibing(盛炳纬) as a modern high school in 1911, the year of Xinhai Revolution

. Initially the school only offered junior high school education. The first principal was Cao Weikang(曹位康). Built in the year of China's Republican Revolution, Zhenhai High School was dedicated to the mission of incalcating new thoughts to students and nurturing talents for a rapidly changing Chinese society.

 caused havoc in the coastal area. When Japanese army entered Ningbo in 1941, the school was forced changed site to a temple in the rural areas to continue teaching. It finally moved back to Zhenhai County after the war ended in 1945.

In 1956, the Communist

 government nationalized all private schools and Zhenhai High School merged with Xincheng High School to became a public-funded school covering both junior and senior high school education, keeping the name of "Zhenhai High School". In 1981, it was acknowledged by the government as one of the 18 "key high schools" in Zhejiang

In 1999, under a new regulation of the ministry of education, the junior section of the school was privatised as a separate school, reusing the name "Jiaochuan Academy". But the new Jiaochuan Academy still uses the same school compound and maintains close relation with the senior section.

 education. Students from Zhenhai High School have won numerous awards in national and international mathematics and science olympiads and other competitions.

In recent years, following the change in government's education policy, Zhanhai High School gradually moves away from the exam-oriented mode and starts to emphasise on an all-rounded education. With its co-curricular activities and various interest groups, Zhenhai High School students can pursue their interests in spare time. Students have won top prizes in national invention competitions and national singing competitions.

Thanks to the generous funding from local government and donation from school alumni, the school underwent major renovation in 2000. The school has a science experiment building, an IT building, a gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool

School culture

Boarding culture

Unlike many other schools in Ningbo, 80% of the student population of Zhenhai High School live in the school boarding house. The school has strict boarding rules and regulations, for example, boarders have get up each day by 6.30am and there is study time for boarders each day from 6.15pm to 8.45pm. During weekends, school organises activities for those boarders staying in school. The activities includes movie screenings, concerts, enrichment courses.

Arts festival

The school arts festival is held in May every year since 1986. It lasts for 2 weeks. The school invites artists, scientists and alumni to give talks to students. There are also performances of student-directed dramas. During the festival, students' works on photography, calligraphy, painting are exhibited in the school multipurpose hall.

Sports meet

Every year November, school holds the annual sports meet. Students from both Jiaochuan Academy (former junior section) and Zhenhai High School senior section take part in the meet. Students compete for their own classes. At the end of the event, the class with best results will be awarded "the best sports class".
