, of which it is a municipal unit. It is the capital of the island of Zakynthos. Apart from the official name Zakynthos, it is also called Chora (i.e. the Town, a common denomination in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town).

The municipal unit of Zákynthos lies in the easternmost part of the island and has a land area of 45.788 km² and a population of 39,015 at the 2001 census. It is subivided into the communities Zakynthos (pop. 11,196), Ampelokipoi

Geography

Zakynthos has a varied terrain, with fertile plains in the southeastern part and mountainous terrain with steep cliffs along the coasts on the west. The mild, Mediterranean climate and the plentiful winter rainfall endow the island with dense vegetation. The principal products are olive oil, currants, grapes and citrus fruit.
