Politics

In the elections of April 18, 1999, he was elected as Metropolitan Mayor of Eskişehir from the Democratic Left Party

In the municipal elections of March 28, 2004, he was elected again with 45% of votes, again under Democratic Left Party (DSP). Due to his success and high popularity, he is widely regarded by the Turkish media as a future leader of Turkish left

He was elected for a third term in the March 2009 elections.

In January 2011 he leave the DSP and changed in February 2011 to the Republican People's Party (CHP)
