, Chairman and Founder of YO! Company, saw Japanese capsule hotels, which were the inspiration for YOtel. The first YOtel was opened in 2007 at London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports, with 50 and 40 "pods" at each, respectively. In 2009, YOtel opened a branch at Amsterdam Schiphol airport and the company the Business Accommodation of the Year award at the Business Travel World Awards.
Gerard Greene, the CEO of YOtel, signed a "Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU)" with Abu Dhabi National Hotels
(ADNH) in 2008, in order to facilitate YOtel's expansion into Abu Dhabi
. It is planned for at least two facilities to be built in Abu Dhabi.
On June 13, 2011, YOtel will officially open a New York City Times Square branch at 570 10th Ave, 10036 as a part of the $300 Million MiMA complex
which includes residential units. Frank Gehry
designed the Signature Theatre. Rockwell Group and Softroom designed the 669 rooms sized at 16 square metre each. June 7, 2011 commences bookings and service . The property includes chef Richard Sandoval's sumo wrestling-themed restaurant, Dohyo, and a multi-bar 4000 ft2 balcony, Terrace .
