Of the 11 Indiana stations served by Amtrak, Waterloo was the third-busiest in FY2010, after Indianapolis and Lafayette, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 60 passengers daily. The station is 25 miles north of Fort Wayne, Indiana

 and when the current station was opened in 1990, it was connected to Ft. Wayne by an Amtrak bus, which is no longer in service.

In October 2010, the town of Waterloo received a $1.8 million grant from the Federal Government to build a longer platform just east of the current station, to bring the station up to ADA standards, to add a canopy, lighting, interactive signs, and to incorporate into the station the historic rail depot, which was restored during 2010.
