. Deemed to be a high performing specialist school in the Performing Arts, the school was awarded a second specialism, Applied Learning, in December 2006 and a third specialism, Languages, in April 2009. The school became eligible to apply to have a sixth form and our first Sixth Form students started in September 2008. With effect from 1 April 2011 Walton became an academy.

General Information

Grantham is an area where selection is still practised and as a result the school's intake is not comprehensive; although in effect a secondary modern, some parents prefer to send their daughters to Walton even if they pass the 11 plus. The school is popular and successful, leading to its being greatly oversubscribed. The number of students on roll represents an increase of 74% since January 1999 when the roll was 445.
The school opened on its present site in 1966. Facilities are regularly refurbished and modernised making it a pleasant and secure environment on a single site which is particularly attractive with many mature trees surrounding the sports field.
Additions to the original school building include a Modern Foreign Language block, a Technology block, a suite of four specialist Science laboratories, a purpose built Performing Arts studio and extended PE changing rooms.
A new Sixth Form building incorporating a theatre was officially opened in June 2010.

The school's ethos is centred on a shared passion for learning, success and continuous improvement.
It has a tradition of an orderly and caring environment and high expectations, and of giving its students the best possible value and experiences.

The Curriculum

The curriculum at Key Stage 3 for 11-14 year old students embraces courses in all the National Curriculum subjects.
For English, Mathematics and Science the girls are taught in ability groups. French is similarly taught in Year 8 and Year 9, but mixed ability tutorial forms. The ability groups are reviewed annually and changes are made in each girl’s best interest following a review of all her work.
Design Technology includes separate courses in Food, Resistant Materials and Textiles. In the same way our Art includes the two disciplines of Drawing and Painting, and Textiles.
Walton’s course of study for 14-16 year olds at Key Stage 4 has a number of GCSE examination subjects which have to be taken by everyone. These are English (including English Literature), Mathematics, Science, Citizenship, Religious Studies and ICT. Girls also take core Physical Education and Careers Education, which are not examined. The girls also choose other subjects to add to this core. English, Mathematics and Science continue to be taught in ability groups. All other subjects are taught to mixed ability groups. The range of subjects we offer varies slightly from year to year.
The Sixth Form offers a combined range of both BTEC and GCE A-level subjects, some of which run in collaboration with the town's grammar schools.

Extra-Curricular Activities

A dedicated staff enables students to learn outside the traditional classroom. A wide range of musical and other artistic opportunities exist as well as sporting activities where girls compete favourably with local regional teams.
Students also participate in a number of interests including Maths Challenge, Young Enterprise, Public Speaking and Citizenship events.
Visits both at home and abroad enhance Languages, History, PE and other subjects.
