Von Hügel Institute is
an academic research institute based at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge. It is a Catholic institute, dedicated to the study of the relationship between Christianity and society. Founded in 1987, it is named after Anatole von Hügel

Current Projects
Professor Loughlin is directing a research project on the impact of Catholic Social Teaching on the present government’s ‘Big Society’ agenda, with funding from the Plater Trust.
Dr Madsen is leading an internationally-based investigation into the illegal trade in human organs, with funding from the Porticus Trust.
As of October 2011, the Von Hügel Institute is hosting a series of seminars on the theme of ‘Renewing Catholic Social Thought: an agenda for the 21st century’. Speakers include academics from the University of Birmingham, University of Oxford and Heythrop College, London, as well as the University of Cambridge.
Recent Projects
In 2008, the VHI produced italicMoral, But No Compassitalic, evaluating the government’s relationships with Christian faith groups working in the voluntary sector, focussing especially on the Church of England. The report, published as a book by Matthew James Publishing Ltd. was reported and commented on in the UK national press.
In 2006, the VHI conducted a report, called italicThe Ground of Justiceitalic for the Catholic Church in England and Wales on the situation and needs of migrants and asylum seekers, with reference to the Church’s responsibilities towards such groups. A follow-up report was produced in 2007.
